Origin Matters

Around Deutschkreutz, exceptional vineyard sites produce distinctive wines. We would like to introduce three of them, as they are particularly characteristic of our wines.

OUR SIGNATURE VINEYARDS

Blaufränkisch at
its finest

The “Blaufränkischland” in the heart of Burgenland is one of Austria’s key regions for red wine. In Deutschkreutz, deep clay soils provide ideal conditions for our wines. Their excellent water-retention capacity, combined with the moderating influence of nearby Lake Neusiedl, creates an exceptional foundation for viticulture. Around Deutschkreutz, outstanding vineyard sites produce wines with distinctive personalities.

THE ANCIENT CORAL REEF

Ried Kart

Three million years ago, this area was an island with a coral reef. Today, Ried Kart is defined by its sparse, calcareous soils, with limestone sandstone and plenty of gravel. These conditions are particularly well suited to Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Blaufränkisch. The poor soils naturally limit vine growth, resulting in less vigorous shoots than on our clay-dominated sites. Wines from Ried Kart reflect this distinctive origin. They tend to be more delicate and vibrant, with an elegant structure, a cool character and pronounced mineral notes.

„Where a mighty coral reef once thrived deep beneath the sea, the wines today are mineral, vibrant and driven by pure fruit.”

ANCIENT CLAY SOILS

Ried
Altes Weingebirge

High above Deutschkreutz lies Altes Weingebirge, a gently rolling plateau with a history stretching back thousands of years. The site benefits from the climate of nearby Lake Neusiedl and offers ideal conditions for Blaufränkisch. Deep soils rich in loess and clay provide exactly what this variety needs to thrive. In recent decades, Merlot and Cabernet Franc have also found a natural home here. The wines from Altes Weingebirge are powerful, rich and concentrated, with an almost baroque character. The relatively moderate difference between day and night temperatures in autumn allows the grapes to develop exceptional depth and fullness.

„High above Deutschkreutz, close to the southern shore of Lake Neusiedl, lies one of the oldest historic vineyard sites in the region.“

THE VINEYARD AROUND THE WAYSIDE SHRINE

Ried
Weisses Kreuz

Ried Weisses Kreuz surrounds our winery and is characterised by deep, heavy clay soils with mineral-rich inclusions that give the soil its distinctive red colour. These conditions are particularly well suited to Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Franc. The vineyard has been cultivated for centuries and is slightly cooler than Altes Weingebirge. Its name comes from a wayside shrine that has stood here since the 17th century. The wines from Ried Weisses Kreuz are typically powerful and structured, with pronounced tannins and excellent ageing potential. To protect our grapes throughout the growing season, we use multifunctional nets covering the vines. They help protect the vines from wildlife in spring, hail in summer and birds in autumn, allowing us to preserve the quality of the grapes right through to harvest.

„The deep, heavy clay soils give the wines of Weisses Kreuz their power, structure and remarkable ageing potential.“

BF SINGLE-VINEYARD SELECTION

The Royal Selection range brings together the rarities from the K+K Kirnbauer winery under one roof. A maximum of 1,500 bottles of each wine is produced.

RIED KART 2019:
Where a mighty coral reef once thrived in the depths of an ancient sea, the wines today show a mineral, taut and fruit-driven character. The soils are warmer, bringing a beautiful ripeness and colour to the berries. Cherry-driven and finely structured, they reveal a bright and expressive aromatic profile.

RIED WEISSES KREUZ 2019:
Nature has its own ways of storing precious water. Here, the deep red clay soils retain a pleasant coolness, encouraging rich dark-cherry flavours. Leather, substance, tension and pronounced tannins promise a full-bodied and deeply satisfying wine.

RIED ALTES WEINGEBIRGE 2019:
Here, on the high plateau above Deutschkreutz and in close proximity to the southern shore of Lake Neusiedl, lies the oldest historic vineyard in the surrounding area. Deep and nutrient-rich, the loess soils promise depth and substance.
