DAS PHANTOM is a marriage of Blaufränkisch, Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. As Austria’s first red wine brand, DAS PHANTOM has been captivating wine enthusiasts since 1987. It seduces with a complex and intriguing nose of wild berry and cranberry notes, complemented by delicate roasted aromas from maturation in barrique and subtle floral nuances. Elegant cassis fruit takes centre stage on the palate, refined and full-bodied, leading into a long and persistent finish. There is no fixed recipe for the blend. Instead, DAS PHANTOM is re-created every year through intensive tasting and careful selection – allowing each vintage to express its own character. And for those who want even more of the experience, DAS PHANTOM is bottled in formats ranging all the way up to 18 litres.

Innovation with a Long History
More than 30 years ago, DAS PHANTOM made its debut. A lot has changed at K+K Kirnbauer since then – new ideas, new approaches and constant innovation have shaped the winery over the years. And DAS PHANTOM has evolved along with it. Its style and character have continued to develop, while always staying true to the story that made it so successful in the first place.
But DAS PHANTOM is not the only thing with an iconic status. Its campaign has become a story of its own. Every year, a new concept is created and brought to life in an elaborate photoshoot, always with a fresh perspective. From Vienna’s Hotel Sacher, Imperial and Bristol to a vintage Rolls-Royce or a historic English stagecoach, when it comes to presenting DAS PHANTOM, no detail is left to chance.
Das Phantom
Our flagship cuvée, led by Blaufränkisch and complemented by Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah, reveals a deep garnet-red colour. Its remarkable viscosity is reflected in slow, tightly formed legs in the glass, an early sign of its concentration and structure.
On the palate, the wine is precise and fruit-driven, with cherry taking centre stage. A delicate salty edge and spicy, almost oriental notes add tension and complexity. Fruit, spice and acidity come together in perfect balance. The long, lingering finish reveals promising tannins that give the wine structure, depth and plenty of ageing potential.
The nose reveals layer upon layer of aromas: Amarena cherry meets cool mint and the delicate tartness of rowan berry. Ripe cranberry and blackberry add juicy fruit intensity, while earthy notes from the Merlot bring depth and warmth, complemented by pecan, dark chocolate and subtle spice.

CREATING DAS PHANTOM
An Experiment
What began as an experiment proved so extraordinary from the very first vintage that it soon became a cornerstone of K+K Kirnbauer’s reputation. The name came from a spontaneous association. When the first vintage was tasted, it seemed so unfamiliar, so different and so mysterious – dark in every sense – that the name Phantom simply suggested itself. The black label was established at the very beginning as well. Today, DAS PHANTOM is an international success.
Every year, creating the blend becomes a family event. The individual base wines are tasted around a shared table, different blends are mixed, tasted and evaluated over several days. Every member of the family chooses a favorite. Discussions can become passionate, but in the end, everyone stands behind the final wine, ensuring that each new vintage continues the tradition of DAS PHANTOM.
A WINE OF POWER
Always with Elegance
The ideal PHANTOM is always a wine of power, balanced by a distinctive sense of elegance. Its color is consistently dark – more black than red – with aromas of sour cherry, leather, tobacco and fine oak. On the palate, fruit remains at the forefront, often accompanied by expressive cassis and a hint of dark chocolate. Silky tannins provide structure. Full-bodied, smooth and harmonious, with remarkable drinkability and a long finish, DAS PHANTOM is a wine with excellent ageing potential. At the same time, its dense, velvety texture makes it wonderfully approachable and enjoyable even when young, particularly during its first phase of fruit-driven expression.
Nothing is as constant as change. DAS PHANTOM has been the flagship of K+K Kirnbauer for decades. Its quality remains constant and yet every vintage brings something new. The Phantom changes. The legend remains.
Innovation mit langer Geschichte
DAS PHANTOM is born.
K+K Kirnbauer unveils a newly designed logo and DAS PHANTOM gets a new look of its own. For the first time, the wine is presented with a completely redesigned label.
After disappearing completely, the year before, DAS PHANTOM returns in 2011. The first campaign built around a visual concept is born. Vienna’s Hotel Imperial provides the perfect setting for its grand debut. And Markus? For the first time, only his hand makes an appearance.
A rare vintage with a small harvest means only a limited number of bottles of DAS PHANTOM are available. The Valentino dress, meanwhile, captures everyone’s attention. For the first time, the campaign features a second visual concept.
For one year only, DAS PHANTOM turns blue. This special edition stands out with an especially fruit-forward character and a slightly different blend.
The 2020 vintage yields an exceptionally small harvest and its rarity becomes the inspiration for the campaign. For the first time, Karin Teigl takes centre stage as the model. And the magnificent historic English stagecoach is pulled by hand all the way to Laxenburg Castle.
At the heights of quality, where the air is thin and true competition is rare, we thought DAS PHANTOM had reached its limit. We were wrong. A new PHANTOM emerges, better than ever and now even certified organic. Could it be the finest Blaufränkisch-based Cuvée of the 2022 vintage? Perhaps even the finest DAS PHANTOM ever made.
